Mindful Habits: Learn the Basics and Benefits of a Meditative Break

Brian Cody |

Attempting to mentally manage the different aspects of your life can create a cluttered mind. This leads to over-stress, a wandering mind, and inefficient work. Practicing relaxation methods will allow you to take back control and mental awareness.

Take time everyday to meditate and follow the steps listed to adapt an effective meditative state.

Dedicate 5 minutes to daily meditation
Using a holistic approach to organization will allow you to reestablish order and clear mental clutter. Taking five minutes to meditate each day, while following the listed steps, is a starting point for stress relief. It is important to find a relaxing environment; this can vary depending on personal preference. Then, adopting appropriate posture and breathing techniques is key to utilizing this time to its full potential. You might consider setting aside this five minutes at the same time each day; creating a routine will make it less likely that you will fall out of practice.

Environment: Find a quiet, peaceful space in your home or outside, where you can be alone and uninterrupted.

Posture: A common meditation posture is being seated with your legs crossed and back straight, but the most important thing is to be comfortable. You can also be laying down, or even in your favorite chair.

Breathe: Close your eyes, and begin deepening your breath. Counting helps—try inhaling for a count of 6, holding for a count of 2, and exhaling for 6. Giving your mind this simple task to focus on will help clear your head.

Routine: Meditating at the same time each day helps you get comfortable in the practice.
